About Salt Therapy & Health Benefits
What is Salt Therapy?
Salt Therapy (also called Halotherapy) is a natural and safe therapy that is risk-free and without side-effects which can assist with relief from a wide range of chronic and acute health conditions and boosts general health and mental wellbeing. It relieves respiratory problems such as sinusitis, hayfever, asthma and bronchitis as well as skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and allergies.
Salt Therapy was used as far back as the ancient Greeks. Today, Salt Therapy is designed to duplicate the microclimate of the salt caves in Europe. Salt therapy rooms disperse negatively ionized finely ground pharmaceutical-grade salt (sodium chloride) through a halogenerator into the salt room as you sit, relax and breathe for 45 minutes. Our Group Room at Salts For Health also has a floor covered in pink himalayan salt, as well as on the walls, providing further negative ions to help you relax.
How Does Salt Therapy Benefit?
The dry aerosol salt particles inhaled during a salt therapy session strengthens the immune system and detoxifies and cleanses the body due to its anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, which loosens up and clears out mucus/phlegm in the airways and lungs, toxins throughout the body, as well as relieving various imflammation in the body and skin.
Better Health, Less Drugs
Salt Therapy can also help reduce dependence on pharmaceutical medicine for a better quality of life. In some cases, you may be able to reduce prescribed medication (this requires your doctor's assessment). This is a great plus because many medications have unpleasant side-effects. Please do not change or stop your medication without consultation from your medical practitioner.
Conditions That Benefit From Salt Therapy
The health benefits of salt therapy are numerous. Here are some of the health conditions that are helped by salt therapy:
- sinusitis / rhinitis / adenoids
- coughs / colds / flu
- ear infections
- chronic lung conditions / COPD
- tiredness, chronic fatigue
- stress, anxiety
- sleep disturbance
- psoriasis / eczema
- cystic fibrosis
- arthritic conditions
- chemical sensitivity
- pneumonia after acute stage
How Many Salt Therapy Sessions Are Required?
This varies from person to person. Some conditions only take one or two sessions to clear up, but some conditons require a few sessions, or many sessions, depending on the problem. Use your own judgement, and feel free to ask us if you have any questions or concerns. Ask Salts For Health about our range of Salt Therapy Session Packages to suit your needs.
Is Salt Therapy Safe For Children and Babies?
Salt Therapy is safe for children, who respond quickly to this treatment. Babies also benefit from Salt Therapy, but we suggest you consult with your health physician for babies under 3 months of age.
Is Salt Therapy Safe During Pregnancy?
While Salt Therapy is safe and beneficial during pregnancy, you may wish to speak with your health physician first if you have any concerns, if you have a complicated preganancy, and/or are taking medications.
What Are The Side-Effects Of Salt Therapy?
While Salt Therapy is natural and without health risks, you may experience a few symptoms during and after your initial sessions, which shows that the Salt Therapy is doing its work of decreasing inflammation, opening the airways, clearing out mucous from the respiratory system and body, eliminating accumulated toxins, pathogens, viruses and pollens.
You may experience:
- minor skin irritation or red patches for very sensitive individuals (if it gets too irritating, you can wash it off in the shower).
- a salty taste on your lips
- mild tickle in the throat (this can be treated at home by gargling with warm water)
- increased mucus production
- runny nose
- watery eyes
- coughing and sneezing
These effects are quite normal, and will decrease after a few sessions as your body's toxins are eliminated. If you have any concerns, feel free to speak with the staff at Salts For Health.
Why Is Inhaling Salt in a Salt Room Beneficial and Consuming Refined Salt Unhealthy?
Not all salt is equal... Salt that is naturally occurring, is not only healthy but very beneficial for the body. However, processing of salt does damage to its natural properties.
Table (refined) salt is natural salt taken and highly processed. It is heated to an extremely high temperature, which depletes the salt of all the nutritionally beneficial trace minerals required by the body to function optimally.
It then has a host of harmful chemicals added, including
chlorine (used to bleach the salt),
synthetic iodine (as opposed to naturally occuring iodine),
talc, in some instances flouride, and very toxic anti-caking agents to keep the salt from clumping up such as:
- Sodium ferrocyanide (cyanide)
- Potassium ferrocyanide (cyanide)
- Calcium ferrocyanide (cyanide)
- silica aluminate (aluminium)
It is the above processing and added chemical cocktail that cause health problems associated with refined salt.
For more information about salt, read Debunking The Salt Myth.
Himalayan Salt or Celtic Sea Salt, however, is unrefined and retains the necessary trace minerals needed by the body and are encouraged to be consumed instead of table salt.
Pure pharmaceutical-grade salt is used and what is inhaled in the Salts For Health salt rooms. It is not highly heated, has no chemical additives or other agents added, therefore retaining salt's natural anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ions are oxygen atoms or molecules which break apart and are either positively charged (positive ions) or negatively charged (negatively ions).
Negative ions.. Nature's Gift
Generated naturally and abundantly in nature via sunlight, lightning and thunderstorms, mountains, moving water such as ocean waves and waterfalls, etc, negative ions are important to our health and feeling of sense of wellbeing and feeling "alive". Imagine the uplifted feelings we experience after a thunderstorm where we can feel the air "cleansed", breathing in and being calmed by fresh mountain air, standing next to the ocean or a waterfall, or even basking in the sun. Just get out in nature!
Positive Ions... Malady of Modern Living
Unfortunately, modern-day living robs the air of negative ions and creates an electrical imbalance in the earth's atmosphere and in our bodies with an over-abundance of positive ions (positively charged particles) - electrical appliances such as televisions, computers, clothes dryers, chemicals in paint, carpets etc, environmental pollution such as high-voltage networks, wi-fi, mobile phone towers emitting microwaves, general pollution, dust, stale air (including cigarette smoke) in homes and offices, cities with little in the way of trees or other nature. We are living in a sea of positive ions. This leads to a range of health and mental complaints.
More Negative Ions = Better Health
Negative ions work by attracting and binding positive ions, which neutralizes the harmful electromagnetic vibrations in our body and environment (electro-smog). Negative ions increase serotonin levels which help lift mood, alleviate depression and seasonal affective disorder (winter depression / SAD). They also help clear the air of dust, mold spores, pollen, pet dander, odors, cigarette smoke, bacteria and viruses. They do this by attaching to these positively charged particles in large numbers, making them too heavy to stay in the air.
How Negative Ions Work In Salt Therapy
Because Salt is negatively charged (negative ions), sitting in a Salt Room helps rebalance the harmful electromagnetic vibrations in our body, which provide not only relaxation and calming of the nervous system, it removes bacteria, pollen, viruses and more. If you are living or working in a stressful environment, have little exposure to nature, are surrounded by eletrcial gadgetry and constantly using your wi-fi or mobile phone/tablet, your system would greatly benefit by sitting in our Group Salt Room where the floors and walls are covered in pink himalayan salt (lots of negative ions) and breathing in the negatively charged pharmaceutical-grade salt (more negative ions). Just take the time to just sit, relax and breathe!
Is It Safe To Spend Time In the Group Salt Room With Others Who Are Sick?
Because of salt's anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, the air in the salt rooms creates a sterile, hypoallergenic, hypobacterial microclimate, making it extremely hard for any mirco-organisms to survive.
Those who have an actively contagious condition are asked to wait till their condition improves before attending. See our Contraindications List »
Salt Therapy strengthens the immune system. It will not only eliminate existing viruses etc in the body during the session but will also minimize the everyday risks after the session/s.
After each session, the chairs, tables and toys wiped down with anti-bacterial wipes, and the air in the salt room is fully ventilated.
For clients with skin conditions such as eczema, we encourage use of the Private Room so they may strip down to minimal clothing without embarrassment to themselves or others.
When not to have Salt Therapy
There are a small number of conditions when it is not advised to have Salt Therapy. Read Contraindications »
